I have 7 servers, 3 use backup exec to back up SQL, Exchange and DHCP onto their own DLT drives. We are setting up a 4th backup on our SAGE server, which I am hoping I can backup SAGE onto DLT drive on this server, but also would like to backup a shared drives from a different server on this one... My question is will I need to use a symantec agent, and if so which one should I get as i have searched and there are lots of different ones, ie SQL, AD and so on.......I dont need these just a simple backup of a drive on another machine... Hope this makes sense.... Cheers |

Have you tried Symantec's forums? I think you might have better luck there

You have to use the agent for what ever type of server your backing up for instance for windows 2003 just a file server or even a DC just the backup agent fore windows is all you need. For the SQL and other servers such as exchange you need the exchange client. The sales people at Symantec will walk you through the process. Once you have them installed they keep working with a low cost for renewal. Especially when you consider the CYA value of the program. Also you can do D2D backups with BackupExec. I use the B2D first then have the system duplicate the backup to tape during the day the regular backups run at night.
