Now days the operating system latest version is VISTA so, the my question is now days who is still working on Windows 95/98/ME

I have an old Compaq that will run 98 on it.. I would have liked to install 98 on my new machine. However 4 Gbs of ram and a duo core 3ghz chip wont allow it to install. Oh well Yet I don't work with 98 as much as i used to.

If you really want to keep your old OSes.

Then use Virtual machines like VMware, VPC 2007 SP1 and Virtualbox.

Cool deal Mas_pogi. I'll look into it. I do have an older disk that is 20 Gbs that is formatted Fat32 just for old programs.

Just try it.


Vmware is not free by the way. Only VPC2007 and Virtualbox.

Yeah I looked at Vmware. I was going.. Humm Donno about that one. Checking out VPC2007 and Virtualbox right this minute. Good ol google.

Well I am using the VPC2007 and have installed 98 on my laptop. Still overkill with the hardware but still works like a charm. Never though 98 could run so fast. lol

Is any one Operating system better than the other? In my experience not really.
The software and machines just get faster.
For example ME has the restore feature built in, but there were programs available to do that for 98.

I am using ME on my internet computer.
Compaq Presario, only 250 megs of memory, 850 processor.

The operating system works just fine, so why change it? (OK, except for "search" right now) see previous post.
Yes, I would like to have a faster machine, but it's not in my budget right now.

I also have a machine with 98se. Again it does everything I need.
I record LPs to Cd, photo-shop things, scan and print. Video in and out to do video editing (it was my first DVD player connected to the TV) It also has a great surround sound system. Great for the games I still can't beat, many of which have become low cost or free due to age.
The scanner and printer are the same vintage, still do a great job. Bet you couldn't tell the difference from a new machine!

I find it fun to go back to the Old Os. However Ive found when I upgrade hardware.. The OS nolonger supports it.. For example. Duo Core Chips. or them Ultra Nvidea cards with the duo GPu's. Such things like that.. For the older OS. I like to tinker with my old DOS games and surf the web with IE explorer 2 or something like that. haha. Also Love to compare the 2 98-vista and just sit and Aww over the grapical Difference they have.

I have WinME which I bought last year. I tried it out for a week and it was c*** the worst OS that M$ have ever made. The simple things you can do with 98 you can't with ME so 98 went back in. The only advantage with ME is you can use flash drives without installing additional drivers, but that no problem on 98.

The problem you have now as already mensioned is that most software will only run on a WinNT system and this is a pain.

My test rig will run/support W98 which does not say much for the spec's of the aforementioned . Though now since I last had a need of W98 I actually keep it on a old 10 GB Sata drive and just change as and when needed

people say its crap but it runs fine and fast
mabye system restore can be annoying but get rid of that and windows me is just as good as windows 98

By the way WinME has two system restores the Windows one and the DOS one, try the DOS one.
