Yes, the PCI connection will be slower than connecting to a motherboard with a SATA header. But it will still be faster than the IDE (PATA) drive.

well arcman mentioned something about soldering an SATA controller onto my motherboard, is this an option? if so, any idea on the cost for the controller and what someone would charge to solder it? or is it more of a hastle than the benefits it would produce?

No... what he was comparing to was the SATA header which on the newer motherboards, soldered on. You can't solder a SATA header to you old motherboard, it has to be done with the card trick.

ahh i see, darn. but from what you were saying dc3 is that using the card, the transfer speeds are only going to be about 27Mb/s faster?

but if i used the PCI card arcman showed me, it only offers transfer speeds up to 150Mb/s, so it would only be 23Mb/s slower, am i understand that right?

Yes it will be slower, but not 27Mb/s, Mb is Mega bits, I wrote MB/s which is Mega Bytes per second. There are a bits to every byte.

sorry, when i was saying Mb/s i meant mega bytes, but yeah, isnt it like 8 bits per 1 byte?

anyways, i think ill go ahead and buy the PCI card, and that Wd raptor x hard drive to go along with it, besides, best buy wants almost double for that hard drive, so it seems like a good deal.

What I had intended to write is that it takes 8 bits to make one byte, don't know what happened to the rest.
