BleepingComputer.com: Computer Not Turning On Completely (no "beep")

Hello from a newbie. I can't get my computer to start up completely. It's a Gateway desktop with Windows ME. It's my old computer that I kept for storage. I was using it one night with no problems, left it on and walked away. When I went back to it the monitor was off and I figured it had just auto-powered down. I moved the mouse to turn it back on but nothing happened. I turned it off and I haven't been able to get it to boot up since. I turn it on, the hard drive spins, the light on my keyboard flashes, the fans are on, the light on the motherboard is on, but that's as far as it gets. I'm getting nothing on my monitor. It's giving me the message "Monitor working correctly. Check power supply and cable." In the past when I turned it on it would "rev up" (like my nephew says), then beep, and then rev up a little more and then the monitor would turn on. Now, it's revving up but I'm not getting that beep. It just stops.


Here's what I've tried:

Replaced the battery inside (CMOS battery?). Took out the old, left it out for 30 minutes, and put in a new one. Nothing

Took out all the memory cards, turned it on and I got the 3 beep code. Turned it off, put the memory back in, turned it back on and nothing (no beeps)

I took it into a shop for a "free" diagnosis. The guy plugged it into his monitor with his cables and it wouldn't start there either.

I replaced the video card with an identical used video card and still nothing.

I unplugged every cable inside the computer that I could and plugged them back in. Still nothing.



Does anybody have any suggestions? I've Googled and Yahooed to all kinds of forums and How-To sites but I'm not having any luck. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sounds like a failed psu. It has 5 voltage rails and if one fails that may happen.

Sounds like a dead CPU.
