Civilization 4 -beyond The Sword Error Black Floor and Water

When ever I try to run Civilization 4 Beyond the sword, a message comes up saying to reduce video settings before closing the game. When i set the graphics settings to low, with no movies, the game did load, but where there was terrain, there was just a black space. Figures and cities look normal though.
I am pretty new to beyond the sword, but is this supposed to happen?

try to find an option for pixel shader, or shadowing and turn them down
