Most of the general guides for windows xp apply to W2K
Xp is just a continuation of W2k with plug and play implemented and a firewall added and a lot of useless eye and ear candy added What's critical is having sp4 and the rollup installed and being behind a good nat/hardware firewall from the beginning -------------------- Chewy

Yup, there are a lot of similarities between Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
One tool built into Windows 2K Pro is Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, and either under there are System Tools is Disk Cleanup, which you can use to clean up unnecessary files. It's perfectly safe. |

First uninstall things from Windows' Add-Remove Programs utility.
Then goto C:\Program Files and see if any uninstalled program has left behind some folder etc. You can safely move it to a backup location, wait for 2 weeks and then delete it. You should not delete it right-away because it may be needed, in that case you can restore it. Be extra careful and dont over-do it. After this you can use free CCleaner tool to clean garbage files and garbage in your registry. http://www.ccleaner.com/ -------------------- Never argue with morons, its waste of time...

Beware, though, as registry cleaners are extremely powerful tools and can render your OS useless. Registry cleaners, in general, are not recommended anyways because they do not speed up your computer at all and cause more harm than good.

If you are running out of disk space, then you need to move the large files such as music and video files to another medium or delete them.
What programs are you having trouble with removing thru the Add/Remove program? Some can be difficult and each would have their specific problem or a special tool may be needed. You can do a search for removal instructions or post back here. Are you having any problems with the computer? Ccleaner is a good program for cleaning up temporary files, logs, cookies, etc. During install you will be offered the Yahoo Toolbar. UNcheck if NOT wanted. http://www.ccleaner.com/ |
