Vista Taskbar Problems icons wont appear

I have windows vista and whenever I turn on my computer my wireless connection, power status, and volume icons wont appear in the taskbar. i go to the settings and when I go to try to check the boxes for them to appear they are greyed out so I cant check them please help.
