I am currently using Windows Vista Home Premium. Now, I have steam, and I try and run Counter Strike Source, A very basic graphic game that I have played for many years. I went into my dxdiag and it says I have Direct X 10 installed. I try and launch the game, It says I need to download the latest version of Direct X. Im thinking this could possibly be a malware problem, as I have uninstalled the game, the steam client, windows updates, everything. Oh and also, the game worked the first time I installed it and then this happened after 3 or 4th launch. Malware?? Thanks.

Some games with Vista use DirectX 9, let the program download and install it. By installing DirectX 9, you will be installing components the game will need that DirectX 10 does not have. It should not damage DirectX 10. Here is a link explaining it: DirectX 9 and Vista. Here's a link to where you can download the files: DirectX 9.0c web installer.

Can you provide us with some specifics of what kind of video card you have.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Your video card isnt quite powerful enough to run all the features of Directx9. I would suggest running Counter-Strike: Source with the following launch options. You go to Games via right clicking on Steam Icon by the Clock then go to Games right click on CSS, then select Properties. You append -dxlevel 80 to your launch options.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

It worked fine the first day I installed it, and then this problem arises. My video card is fine to run it I just dont understand why this is happening.

Counter-Strike: Source like many of the Source games are constantly receiving updates to the engine which may raise system requirement levels. Have you updated your video card drivers lately?

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Yes my drivers are fully updated, I have re-installed the game numerous times, I just wanna play, the part that kills me is that I was playing fine the other day on this exact computer, so there has to be a way I can get the direct 9 components rockin.

Have you reverted your drivers back to a known copy that worked?

About once every few months MS Releases point releases of their DirectX gaming API that includes new features or bug fixes. You may want to check here: http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/About.../DirectX10.aspx
