BTW if you are going to ask questions to stump CGM, which i have no problem with, unless he gives harmful advice that is mad.gif , I would still prefer the questions to be in the appropriate forum. This forum is for off topic conversation, if you are asking windows questions, please post in the windows forum..etc.

Thanks

OK Cow, here is a good one for you: I'm sorry that it is a little long, so bear with me.

On my friends computer, he has 2 hard drives: one that has 98, and the other 95. Here are the problems that I have encountered, and would like to know the solution.

98 Hard Drive:
  • stay on Splash Screen indefinitely. It stops loading, but it does not come back with any errors.
  • When you try to use a boot disk, you can get a command prompt, but nothing else will load because HIMEM fails to load
  • If you attempt safe mode, it will immediately take you to the command prompt, with the same results
  • He does NOT have any restore CDs, or even the full version
  • Some DOS commands work, but most do not.
There is absolutely no CD support. I have tried every generic driver, but no luck.

95 Hard Drive:
  • Will not boot up with boot disk
  • The only thing I can get, is after 10 minutes, is that it is safe to turn off the computer.
Im sorry that I can not tell you the name of the computer, and I do not have easy access to it. I suggested that he re-installs 98, but he said that there is something on there that he wants to keep. I was going to look for it via DOS, but he only remembers what the icon looks like, and not the filename.

I did see a few things that was a little unusual:
He has a folder called WINDOWSTEMPWINDOWSTEMPWINDOWSTEMP, and it is a copy of WINDOWSTEMPWINDOWSTEMP
On the root directory, there are multiple folders, counting, starting with DOS00001, and continuing to DOS00047, and all of them are identical

I have seen some of these symptoms before as viruses, but here is the strangest thing of all: When I try either HD as a slave with a working HD, it doesn't see it at all. Any suggestions?

Thats is a good one. I will do some research for you. There also might be a conflict going on but let me check up on it. Does he have both hd,s connected to the same cable with something like a splitter? If so why not disconnect one after the power is off and try to just use one to get it to load. This might help. That will tell if its a program prob. How does he switch between the both of them. Does he have one of those trios plus multi drive selector things. Did he just start using 2 drives? If both drives are being used on a splitter and not by a program then this could be thr problem.

All new questions should be posted in the appropriate forum please.

I do not want tech support questions posted in the general chat!

Like when you have a question post another thread in the windows forums just not in the thread! That way we wont have this thread flooded by 100's of questions

I think so, at least to finish the two that are started and involve windows operating system questions.

If I want to try to "stump the cow" again, I'd start a new topic...if it involved a win xp ? then I'd do it in this forum. whistling.gif
