It's then asking you to choose whether to start normally, in safe mode, or two other options or leave it til it starts itself. I've tried all options and it goes to a blue screen for literally 2 seconds before going back to the original screen with the above message. Worst thing is that I have loads of stuff on the harddrive which I just can't afford to lose [yes I know back up backup backup] I have been told I could take out the hard drive and buy a case with a USB lead in which to put the harddrive and then use it like an external hard drive? Any ideas please? Thanks |

If you have the Windows Startup CD you can try using the Recovery Console to run chkdsk.
Note: You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM is the first device in the boot order to be able to boot from the Windows installation disk. To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted. 2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. 3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the]Recovery Console. 4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER. 5. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER. 6. To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 -------------------- Lord, may we please have a little more chlorine in the gene pool?

You can also try selecting "Disable Restart on System Failure" at the Safe Mode screen. (you may not have this option)
If you do have that option, when it Blue Screens, you should have time to write the error down. Post that in your next response and we can go from there. If it is a hard drive failure, you would be best to do the External Drive thing ASAP, before it fails for good. Good luck. DR -------------------- |
