Could be broadcasts sent to your router to say I am still here do not release my lease or to your modem. Also keep alive packets to web applications such as forums.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

If you monitor your internet connection you'll find that there's things that constantly check for updated content. The problem is in finding out what it is. For example, I have the Boston RedSox page open on my system - and it constantly checks for updates - to include linked sites that aren't obviously associated with the RedSox webpage.

An independent virus scan would tell you if it's anything bad. (Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)

If you're interested in getting more info about what's doing it, there are different network tools that'll get the information. I'd suggest posting over in the Networking forum for more information on them: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum21.html
