I have a 4 yr old HP laptop running Win XP. Lately been having problem with it running on ac power. At first thought it may be the power cord being crimped. Bought replacement and worked for a few days. Now having the same problem. I have to wiggle the cord to get it to charge the battery. Once the battery is charging it will run. The icon says it is running on ac power but the battery is loosing power. Once the battery is drained ---- I start all over again.
Could it be the battery or the Dc jack? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The DC jack solder joints to the system board could be failing. That's a common hardware problem with laptops. Especially when you put a lot of excess strain on the cord
I would recommend a local repair shop for the fix. No big outfits like Geek Squad
Once it's repaired, if it's a straight-in connection, I recommend a right-angle connector adapter. It tends to swivel and causes less strain

Thanks That's what I was thinking. It's my daughter's computer and she is not as gentle as she should be. Do you know if it is an expensive fix?

I can usually get a replacement jack for under 10 dollars, But this is not a job for the novice. I've seen them replaced for anywhere from 50-100 dollars.
