Update - gave that HDD a go and installed windows on it. managed to get to windows desktop then tried to install some motherboard utilities from the CD and it rebooted. now it makes a REAL loud clicking sound and will not boot. sad.gif

Dont know wheather to risk trying same hdd again - as i cant find another 500GB hdd with 32mb cache for reasonable price. any one recommend any others?

The leading cause of early drive failure is supposed to be caused by head slap, this would occur during shipping or handling,
throwing the drive around or dropping it.

Seagate has about the best reputation and the longest warranty

Yeah everyone i read about that had this problem says they swore by seagate untill the 7200.11 series. now a redeculous amount are having the problem i have.

Looking at a WD WD5001AALS at the min but double the price sad.gif

- think it mite b a WD7501AALS as 500 doesnt seem to exist
