see what changing the ide/sata raid function to disabled does

that should turn off raid and enable you to reset the fat to factory defaults by deleting the partitions

Ok i did as you said - deleted any partitions on each HDD individually (there was only one on one disk @ 400GB) - started back up in RAID mode and same thing - sees both individually.

Surely this is to be expected as my motherboard manual tells you to insert a floppy (when F6 is pushed) to install the RAID drivers... and this lets it see it as one 400GB HDD which worked when i tried it.

Maybe my BIOS isnt updated? i havnt updated it manually in 3 years.

So now im back to the same point where i can get it to see one 400 GB HDD and install windows but it has the BSOD i described earlier:

"disable any anti-virus disk defrag or backup utilities. Check HDD configuration and check for driver updates; run CHKDSK /F to check for hardware corruption. Techincal info: STOP (xxxxx...)"

Any more ideas huh.gif

P.S. Chewy when you said "reset the fat to factory defaults", what do yo mean by fat??

fat... Rite.

So it sems RAID just aint gonna wrk then...

Il just have to bite the bullet and forget about RAID. My next option is to get a new HDD, thinking 1TB so it will do me for a while in terms of capacity. I will then use one of the old 200GB HDDs as an internal backup.

Have you guys got any good advice on a 1TB HDD for around £100 ($200)?

I saw this and was interested:

It look any good? Thanks for the help by the way, shame i couldnt get back working smile.gif

I would never advise a home user to get a 1TB drive...just too large for practical home computing.

All of your eggs (no matter how many partitions you might create) are in one basket...I prefer to spread the possibility of error around a bit by using multiple hard drives and partitions.

Running either chkdsk /r or defragging a drive of that size...becomes a 2-day task for many users, which probably means that it would not get done.

Really...there's nothing gained by using a drive of that size...unless you really have huge files or you just think that having all your data on one drive is a good thing. It's not, IMO.

I do have large sets of files being a computer animator - and i download alot so thats why im thinking of 1TB. Plus as i said i will use a 200GB HDD to backup important work stuff so its not all my eggs in one basket!

chewy - yup i used the diognostic utility on both HDDs and wiped them clean a few days ago - (said there were no errors)

A message which says "Clear disk data?" will appear.
If you are sure to clear the data in the selected hard drives, press Y. (If the hard drives contain previously
created RAID array, you need to press Y to clear the data from the hard drives.)

Did you do this the last time you created the stripe?

Any final ideas about getting this darn RAID to work anyone?

If not some advice on a 1TB HDD for around £100 ($200) would be great - I know you said you do not reccomend 1TB louis but i will be backing up on a seperate HDD as I said and i do use alot of data.

I prefer seagate, longer warranty, and smaller size which has been out longer and hopefully worked the bugs out, a friend bought a 1TB a few months ago, it crashed shortly after he had almost loaded all his data on it, he's a DJ and his music and karaoke almost filled it.

cool looks good. I could get a couple of these - but the seagate data rate is @ 105MBPS where as the samsung is @ 300MBPS - quite a difference?!

An anoying thing i have is that my newish graphichs card covers 2 of my SATA ports on my motherboard, i dont suppose there is any kind of work around to this, like a small extension / adaptor that doesnt pertrude from the port which the HDD cable can plug into?

nothing but a bald faced lie, that's the sata 2 speed and burst only

do the math and even at 32MB in cache, burst only lasts 1/10 second

the 100MB/s is a sustained transfer peak rate

Awesome that cable looks spot on.

Rite here is my new thinking... blush.gif

Il buy one of those Seagate 500GB HDDs and run that as the C drive with windows and my docs etc

Il use one of my 200GB HDDs as a secondary HDD for downloads and other random stuff

Il use the other 200GB HDD as a backup for my docs and important stuff.

NO RAID! hehe. How does that sound? I should have no probs setting that up should I... surely?!

Sounds like a good plan, after you get the new hard drive up and running, be sure and partition it so you can have a data partition also, I would keep critical stuff there

recheck each of the old drives before trusting them, those cheapo models tend to die after a few years
