Try rebooting. Drive 0 is probably the active C drive. A may be the usb drive as you don't have an A drive.

yes, i think so too.
the drive 0 configuration looks about correc for the laptop. Looking at Dos A "Unable to read sector Zero SpinRite is unable to read the first sector of this removabnle device" ...not promising? |

Yeh, sorry to say, but it appears the drive is dead. You can try putting the drive in a machine with an ide connection and try again but I don't have much hope. We tried!

I would definitely install the drive to the IDE bus before I gave up on it. USB connections are usually not recognized as Hard drive controllers by the system BIOS and thus by Spinrite.

OK... so if it a mechancal failure (and that is what it sounds like), what are the chances of opening the drive and finding out what is wrong (maybe the arm dislocated....)??
Or try the freezer method.... put in freezer for 2 hours (DRY) then remove and start-up and transfer data?? |

As Musky said, I would try it on an IDE connection. The freezer probably won't work as that is usually a bearing failure. But what the hell, any port in a storm.

If the drive is spinning and since you say you hear it, it probably is, and if it's not making any loud noises or "screeches", then I don't think the read/right head or "armature" is damaged. Try what we said about installing it as an internal drive first.
The theory behind putting the drive in the freezer is if the platters have become warped from overheating, in theory, you can cool them down which will in effect "shrink" them so that they won't rub against the inside of the drive case until they heat up again, meanwhile you may be able to get some data off. I have done this with some success, it takes a lot of patience. But these were drives that I could hear rubbing against the case. I don't think that's what you're experiencing. OK, thanks guys !!!
I'll try the IDE connection later on main PC. I have no jumper switch, or way to find the settings as slave. Asd a last resort, I may open the drive to examine the physical damage. (curiously, as a professional, I design clean-rooms for the pharmaceutical industry, and now even have Sony as client for one of their CD-coating factories. So I might be able to do the job under clean-room conditions) Thanks again for the help, and I'm sure the software will come in handy forother stuff |

It's the three loud clicks which indicate physical damage imo. Three clicks, then it goes silent.
I wonder how much is needed to put the disc itself into another drive. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...rs_and_head.jpg This post has been edited by mike=)).: Oct 4 2008, 06:34 PM |

OK, thanks.
btw.. if sector zero can't be read, that means the disc itself is damaged on that sector (unlikely) or that the mechanical stuff (arm) isn't working...right? |

At this point that can't really be ascertained untill you try it in an IDE machine. As Musky said, many laptop bios cannot read a usb device on the boot. Good luck and please let us know what you find for our future knowledge. That would be very helpful.
