What do the items under the processes tab in Task Manager stand for?

Hello comsol,
The list of processes are all the tasks that windows is performing at that time. The CPU will go through each entry on the list over and over again performing its tasks. The list also is useful for closing programs that wont close and allocating more resources to a certain application.
If you were to open windows media player, an entry will appear on the list called wmplayer.exe. If you want to improve the responsiveness of the application you can right click on the entry and set its priority to above normal etc. while selecting end task will terminate the program.

When you launch an executable, part of its code is being loaded into computer’s memory. This code is the process. It allows the system to run the corresponding program.
In simple phrase, every running program is represented by its main process (or task). If such process doesn’t exist, the application doesn’t run at the moment.
