I personally prefer cable as its always on and does not touch phone lines where here in NYC can be a ugly situation.

I use DSL, because I live in a very dense neighborhood, and consequently the cable download speeds tends to vary when many neighbors would use Cable; in addition, the DSL service through the local phone company has many good features that the cable service (which suffers some interruptions in service from time to time) does not. That is Chicago for you, though.

Perhaps the answer to your question actually depends on the services offered in one's own area, and the experiences of local users.

We use SBC DSL at our house. SBC has a lot of cool features.
