When chkdsk cannot run, it's usually the drive or the file system (NTFS) that has gone astray. My experience is that chkdsk will tell me if the file system is screwed up. Louis |

Well, right now I can't do anything with it. Its won't load from cd to allow me to do a repair install, it won't go into safe mode or anything else. I s it safe to assume that the drive needs to be replaced?
Oh! By the way thanks to everyone who tried to help I do appreciate it! |

The Toshiba M45's (I have one) came with a Ghost based image to recover the system from. Toshiba will charge about $45 US for a set of recovery disks the last that I heard. AFAIK, this model did not come with a restore partition.
Try this free, bootable diagnostic for the hard drive: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT Don't bother with the Quick Test, just run the Advanced test. Try this free, bootable memory diagnostic: http://www.memtest86.com/ Let the test run for a minimum of 3 passes (but overnight is better). If it starts giving errors, then stop the test. These Toshiba's are also a bit quirky in that you've gotta press F12 to access the boot menu - but the boot menu isn't very obvious. What happens is that a little underline appears under the 4 icons that are displayed on the startup screen. Once the underline appears, you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move from one to the other - as I recall the CD drive is the 2nd one there. -------------------- - John
