Asus mobo: A8N32-SLI Deluxe, On-board sound AMD Athlon Processor 64x2 Dyual, Core processor 4400+, 2.21 GHz RAM: 2.00 GB Win XP Pro 2002, SP2 I lose all sound for no apparant reason. It quits when it wants to and doesn't seem to matter what program is or has been running prior to that. When it quits, I get the "no audio device" error in Audio Device properties. I have tried changeing to different speakers & cable that are known to work. I've updated all drivers. Device Manager shows all drivers & codecs working properly. I've tried to reboot with no effect. I've tried turning off the computer for various times periods & no effect. I've restored prior working images with Acronis & no effect. I've restored the original image with no effect. I've updated drivers. I've checked BIOS & the stetting show on-board sound enabled. After trying all of the above & more in many different orders & combinations, the sound does not come back. Then it will somehow start working again and all is fine for a while. I have no idea what made it work again. Then I'll start using the computer again and after a while (never any certain amount of time), it will stop again. I have made new images with Acronis when the sound is working, but restoring to them has no effect. There is one thing missing in Device Manager when the sound goes out. That is the nForce Audio Codec. I reinstall it and get no effect. I reload the drivers & get no effect. It seems that something in my computer is removing or disabling this sound device, but I can't figure out what it is. It doesn't happen consistently or with the same program running each time. I ran Hijackthis and the log follows: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 6:53:19 PM, on 9/2/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE D:\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe D:\Acronis\TrueImage\TrueImageMonitor.exe D:\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe D:\Matrox Graphics Inc\PowerDesk HF\Matrox.PowerDesk.PDeskNet.exe D:\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedul2.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe D:\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe D:\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcpsvcs.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\snmp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe D:\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe D:\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe d:\matrox graphics inc\powerdesk hf\Matrox.PowerDesk.Communications.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE D:\AVG\AVG8\aAvgApi.exe D:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://edgarsherrod.embarqspace.com/# O2 - BHO: HelperObject Class - {00C6482D-C502-44C8-8409-FCE54AD9C208} - D:\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagItBHO.dll O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - D:\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - D:\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - D:\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - D:\AVG\AVG8\avgtoolbar.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - d:\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: SnagIt - {8FF5E183-ABDE-46EB-B09E-D2AAB95CABE3} - D:\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagItIEAddin.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - d:\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - D:\AVG\AVG8\avgtoolbar.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acronis True Image Monitor] "D:\Acronis\TrueImage\TrueImageMonitor.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Matrox PowerDesk 8] "D:\Matrox Graphics Inc\PowerDesk HF\matrox.powerdesk.exe" /silent O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Auto EPSON Stylus Photo R220 Series on LAP] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATIAIA.EXE /P42 "Auto EPSON Stylus Photo R220 Series on LAP" /O14 "\\LAP\EPSONSty" /M "Stylus Photo R220" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZoneAlarm Client] "D:\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG8_TRAY] D:\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] D:\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = D:\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://D:\MICROS~1\Office10\EXCEL.EXE/3000 O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - D:\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - D:\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll O16 - DPF: {05CA9FB0-3E3E-4B36-BF41-0E3A5CAA8CD8} (Office Genuine Advantage Validation Tool) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=67633 O16 - DPF: {17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700} (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39204 O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - D:\AVG\AVG8\avgpp.dll O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll O23 - Service: Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service (aawservice) - Lavasoft - D:\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe O23 - Service: Acronis Scheduler2 Service (AcrSch2Svc) - Acronis - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedul2.exe O23 - Service: AVG Free8 WatchDog (avg8wd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - D:\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe O23 - Service: Canon Camera Access Library 8 (CCALib8) - Canon Inc. - D:\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe O23 - Service: TrueVector Internet Monitor (vsmon) - Zone Labs, LLC - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe -- End of file - 4971 bytes Any help is greatly appreciated. I have moved your Topic that includes a HijackThis log here to the Misplaced HJT Logs forum. You posted your log in a forum not intended for HijackThis logs analysis and probably missed the directions we provide to those who require assistance. We can only allow topics with such logs in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. This restriction is to ensure you get the best help available, from those who specialize in malware anlaysis and removal. It also should prevent you from receiving ineffective or even potentially dangerous advice, whether well meaning or not.
Prior to posting a HJT log, we ask that you please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Following the steps in this Guide will allow the HJT Team to quickly help you with specific fixes for what may remain on your system. Please complete all the steps in the Guide. If you have performed some of them already, then just continue with the next. If you can't perform a step, then skip it and continue with the next. The last step will include downloading and using the most current version of HijackThis if the first line of your log does not appear as follows: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Please note that it is important that HijackThis be run and a log created while in normal mode. If you run it and create your log while in safe mode, you will be asked to redo it again properly. When you have completed those steps, start a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum as directed in the Guide to post a new log. Please DO NOT post any more logs to this topic, or post a log again in the wrong forum. This Misplaced HJT Logs forum is strictly a holding area where the BC Staff can assist you with preparations for and to properly post your log. If you have a question or encounter a problem in the Prep Guide, please do post back to this topic; that is what it is here for. When your new HJT log is posted in the proper forum, please reply to this topic with a link to your new topic. Once that is done, a Member of the HJT Team will analyze your log and assist you with step by step instructions to clean your computer or otherwise advise what needs to be done. Thanks for your cooperation and good luck. The BC Staff -------------------- Mark
