Data Recovery From Dell Laptop? Not sure if this is even possible

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook. The OS Recently Crashed (XP) We knew the hard drive had caused the problem. The Dell Laptop has a built in System Restore to Factory Condition, Which we all knows Wipes out the hard drive and reinstalls everything. however, Probably about 40-50% into the System Restore, It Errored out (Sorry I forget the message) - This tells me that the hard drive needs to be replaced - The Question is, Is there any chance the Data on the old drive could be recovered, even though It went through What I mentioned?? I doubt there is but its worth a shot to ask

I know there a converter that would let me plug the laptop hard drive into the desktop hard drive, but I wonder if the data is even there still

You should be able to recover most data, even after a failed installation, unless the drive isn't recognised at all. Not sure which recovery programs are best. I'd like to know myself.

All I can say is it's worth a shot. The important thing is not to mess with the drive until you have a plan of action.

Thanks A ton for the fast response, I think I will give it a shot, Not like I can do more damage.

I would imagine once I get that cable converter, if I can assign the laptop hard drive as a slave drive and then plug it into my desktop, and read it as like a D Drive or something, anyone got any pros/cons for this?
