OK, when I try to install the appropriate driver, I get an error message "Device not found. Reboot system and try again" or something like that. What do I do?

http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads.html Click on XP, then Audio. When you click on Download, it will take you to the page where you can click on the "more information" button and read the installation instructions.

From Webopedia.com
Quote
Controllers must be designed to communicate with the computer's expansion bus. There are three standard bus architectures for PCs -- the AT bus, PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), and SCSI. When you purchase a controller, therefore, you must ensure that it conforms to the bus architecture that your computer uses.

The drivers for the sound card or sound chip...typically install the sound controller. If the sound controller in Device Manager is missing or has yellow markings, then you need to install the sound drivers.
