Help With Multimedia Audio Controller Driver

After installing Windows XP, Device Manager reported that the Multimedia Audio Controller was not installed.
But I think that I need it for sound to come out of the computer.

What is the make and model number of your computer (for example: Dell Latitude D380)?

OK, when I try to install the appropriate driver, I get an error message "Device not found. Reboot system and try again" or something like that. What do I do?

Is this the driver you tried to download?
http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads.html Click on XP, then Audio. When you click on Download, it will take you to the page where you can click on the "more information" button and read the installation instructions.

If you want sound you either have to have a sound card ora built-in onboard sound chip

I think you are confusing what a controller is. the sound card (or chip) is the controller

From Webopedia.com

Regardless of whether you have an onboard sound chip...or whether you have installed a PCI sound card...the audio controller MUST appear in Device Manager before you will have sound from the system.

The drivers for the sound card or sound chip...typically install the sound controller. If the sound controller in Device Manager is missing or has yellow markings, then you need to install the sound drivers.
