You Can Explain Smtp Relay

Can anyone tel me what is smtp relay.

pls explain me in simple terms as im not an expert in networking..

Basically a relay mail server will accept and forward email from anyone. The mail server acts as a mail 'router' and proxy server. They're not popular today because spammers would use them to hide their original address.
