Like you say, that function is a "typical" one you should expect to work properly in Thunderbird. I'd probably try uninstalling it and re-installing it.
If it once worked, and no configuration changes were made that prompted the malperformance, it might be a quick way to restore it. -------------------- patiently patrolling, plenty of persisant pests n' problems ...
