It started with the home Page Change problem, I got rid of that with a restore point change. Now I get the not responding--end program, slow death wait that makes all funtions intolerable. McAfee seems to download way too often, and then shuts off its own virus scan when it does. Downloading from an uknown source is another problem, just plain maddening. Hello aafa smile.gif Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I apologize for your wait. If you have since resolved your problem I would appreciate you letting us know.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we will ask you to while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.



Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.


  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)




Please include both logs from RSIT along with the log from Kaspersky in your next reply

Before You perform the following I want to make you aware of this information concerning McAfee and conflicts with other security software. This could be your problem with the McAfee constantly do weird things. I will leave it to you to make up your mind which way you want to go but I see some elements of AVG8 on your machine. I don't know if you had this before and uninstalled it or not but I want to make you aware that running two anti-virus programs at the same time can cause problems with your computer since their real-time protection can interfere with each other. If you decide you do not want to keep McAfee the AVG 8 is a good product and I can give you a link to another free one if you want it. Here's the link to what I am talking about concerning McAfee and associated problems with other programs:

Keep in mind that if you stay with McAfee to keep it disable long enough to perform the things listed below, but of course I would strongly advise against any web surfing without your anti-virus updated and running. That's asking for trouble.


Now let's do the following:


1.)

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
    Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.



2.)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.




When completed please post the log from MBAM along with a HJT log. Also let me know what your decision is concerning the McAfee and how your computer is running now.

First off, thanks for the help, it is gladly appreciated.

I would like to change from McAfee to AVG if you think it is better. What do you use on your computer ? It doesn't have to be free, just reliable and compatible. I use Consumers Reports, with good results, for alot of things that I buy. They can't test everything, but do a good job. They fail to even mention AVG and I'm sure other good products. Is it alright to use the Windows Firewall with other Anti-virus, or should I use that particular products own firewall ?

How is the Computer running now? about the same with the @#%&* exception that now everytime I go to my Browser I get a Security warning dialog box stating: current web page is trying to open a site in your trusted site list, C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpsp3res.dll After multiple+++ clicks on Yes to allow, it finaly goes away, same for clicking no to not allow. ARRRRG!!! WTF?
