Thanks for pointing me to your topic "Preparation Guide for use before posting a Hijack Log. I was floundering and your step by step instruction really helped.

Here's the initial problem. Clicking on the desktop icons and nothing would happen, but it was erratic. After rebooting several times it would work. While it was in one of it's rare working modes I followed your steps

Adware only found some minor problems no virus. I ran it again and it was clean.

Spybot SD found: Fraud.XPAnitvirus and Spyhunter and I removed them. Ran it again and it came up clean.

My AVG didn't find anything

Stinger didn't find anything

I finished last night and thought I had the problem sloved, but when I rebooted to run Hijack the icons wouldn't work, I couldn't even run Task Mgr. The Start menu froze. I shut it down and restarted and nothing worked so I shut it down again and it stalled in the Windows is shutting down screen. I turned it off. This morning I gave it another try and it's working perfectly. I was able to run Hijack and save the log, run ie and post it. I'm stumped

Here's the log

I forgot to mention that it seem like there is a correlation as to what loads and whether or not the laptop works. If all the appropriate icon are on the taskbar the laptop works if only some of them are there it doesn't. This morning all the icons where there.
1. the touch pad
2. AGV
3. graphic card
4. desktop search
5. Spybot
6. network
7. wireles
8. new updates

The updated just downloaded yesterday and I don't want to install with the lap acting like this.

Hello and welcome to BC

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. We aim to provide the valuable service known to come from BC to every member we can, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Please see here for instructions
how to install HijackThis and make a logfile. Save it into convenient location and include it to your next reply, please.

Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post back with HijackThis log and Kaspersky report.

Regards

No, the laptop is still the same. Please don’t apologize, I know how busy you’ve been, I’m just glad you’re willing to help. Yesterday after getting your reply I tried all day to get the laptop on the internet. I could get to the desktop, but only some of the programs would work. I couldn’t get IE to run even if I used the run command and typed in iexplorer. Today I’m having the same problem, but I went through a backdoor, I ran a program and click on get help from internet and got on the web. I was able to browse their help site and click on any web address that was already in the address bar’s drop down list, but if I typed in a new address IE would lock up. I was able to click on the forum address (it was already in the drop down list) and get to your reply. I click on your link to Kaspersky, got there, but Kaspersky need Java ver. 1.5 or higher. I try to install it, but no luck. So I’m not sure what to do next.
Thank again
Nancy

Hi nacyw39,

I am going to assist you with your problem.

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Some of our fixes will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Note: If you could not connect to internet even with your backdoor method, you can download MBAM stet-up via another computer and transfer it to the laptop. Then install and update it.
  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from MajorGeeks
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Right-click the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Tray Icon and select Exit.

  2. Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 key:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
    • Press the Enter key.

  3. Please start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    Once started:
    • Click on the Settings tab and under General Settings.
      • Make make sure Automatically save and display a logfile after removel is checked.
      • Make sure everything else, other than Anonymously report statistic to Malwarebytes' Threat Center, are checked.
    • Click on the Scanner tab.
    • Make sure you check the Perform full Scan option.
    • Click on Scan to start the scan process.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If you are asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  4. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized). Also tell me about the current condition of the laptop.

Note:The logs will be created in this folder: C:\rsit
In your next reply:
  • The log of MBAM.
  • The RSIT log.
  • Tell me the current condition of the laptop.

Laptop Condition: Same as before

I could not run mbam in normal mode so I followed your instructions and performed steps 1 and 3 in safe mode. In safe mode I was able to download, install and run mbam. It found some infected files and removed them. I then rebooted the system. Here a recap of what happen from there.

Reboot 1: (10 icons on the taskbar) I got this message from Spybot S&D
Category: SCR extension handler
Change: value change
Old Data: "%1" /s
change: "%1" %*
Since mbam had just cleaned the system I accepted the change. After the system finished booting I clicked on IE and just got the hour glass, the start menu wouldn't work either. So I had to shut down using the power button
Startup 2: (6 icons) nothing worked
Startup 3: (9 icons) Got the same message from Spybot, this time I denied the change. I didn't click on any icons, I went right to the start button and used the backdoor to access the internet. I was able to download and install RSIT, but when I clicked on the icon to run it I got the hour glass. I had to shutdown the system.
Startup 4: Started in safemode and redownloaded RSIT, installed and ran it. Save the log files and rebooted.
Reboot 5: (10 icons) nothing worked
Reboot 6: (8 icons) nothing worked
Reboot 7: (10 icons) I was able to use the back door and reply. I'm going to try to copy the logs to this reply, but I'm not sure I will be able to. If not I'll copy then to a flash drive and use another computer to finish this reply.
I don't know why but the log files are not on the desktop. I don't know if it's because I saved them to the desktop in safemode or something really weird is going on. I'm going to post this reply and boot to safemode and see if the logs are there. I hope all my work is not lost!!!
