Yes, China's human rights record isn't to be brushed under the carpet because they are hosting the Olympics.

For shame, abacus.

Unless you were just inviting debate - in which case bravo! :flowers:

Edit: btw, GB are above Australia's 11 with 12
The Debate was quite a Nice one, except for a few points, soon sorted out by some Nice people, thanks for the Compliment, Mate.

Just always remember this?
At the closing ceremony IOC president Jacques Rogge declared the event a "truly exceptional Games" after earlier asserting that the IOC had "absolutely no regrets" in choosing Beijing to host the 2008 games.[6] The choice of China as a host country was the subject of criticism by some politicians and NGOs concerned about China's human rights record.[7][8] China and others, meanwhile, warned against politicizing the Olympics.[9][10]

The Games saw 43 new world records and 132 new Olympic records set.[11] A record 87 countries won a medal during the Games. Chinese athletes won 51 gold medals altogether, the second largest haul by a national team in a modern, non-boycotted Summer Games.[12] Michael Phelps broke the records for most golds in one Olympics and for most career gold medals for an Olympian. Usain Bolt secured the traditional title "World's Fastest Man" by setting new world records in the 100m and 200m dashes.
Oh right sorry forgot about that .

Yeah it was a Good debate about the Olympics including the 19 Gold Medals better than Australia's 14 :trumpet: and also about China as a whole.

Just to help GB to get ready for 2012? May I give you a Link to typical Aussie Slang you will no doubt hear? You could pass it on to the Balmy Army that follows Match ups with the Aussies and Kiwis.

It is low profile, but if course words offend, Please don't click on the Link.

All the Best, Mate, Aussies will make you eat your words in four years, about the Olympics, sooner for the rest.
Eep, I seem to have lost the 'thread' of the thoughts here?

For, was it intended to mean that if you don't win, you "aren't good enough", hence "you're a pig"?

Have often wondered about the seemingly 'odd' system of a citizen from one Country representing another Country during the Olympics myself. It does seem strange and do wonder what the reasoning behind it is.

But that said, I wonder how the above reasoning works because, if a Chinese person playing for America equals the term "pig", surely wouldn't that make all of America "pigs" for allowing it?
well i already said the olympix are tainted and i dont get into the country battles at all. i just like watching the competition. for example- the other day team handball was on. i started watching it. i could not tell you the teams playing. i just dont care. but ill watch because of the sport

Woody,

my only point is that one of the main themes of the olympix is the international competition. in my opinion, this elements is very watered down when athletes can just go play for any country they want

Woody,

Mickey taking is yet another Sport the Aussies, Kiwis and Poms excel in, Mate.

Latest News on the Olympics.
Phelps & Co. Blow U.S. TV Record Out of the Water
By Natalie FinnWed 27/08/08Sure, it lasted for 17 days (not including soccer)—but still!

Thanks to NBC's multipronged, round-the-clock coverage, the 2008 Summer Olympics reached 214 million viewers, making it the most-watched event in U.S. television history, according to numbers released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

The extra eyeballs glued to such spectacles as Michael Phelps' acquisition of a record eight gold medals, the triumph of the itty-bitty Chinese women's gymnastics team and the U.S. "Redeem Team's" total domination over all comers in basketball helped the Beijing games surpass the previously most-watched event of all time—the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta—by 5 million viewers.

Beijing also blew Athens away by 11 million.

"This audience record is something I thought I'd never see again, but what really satisfied me is the way in which these Olympics truly captivated and seemed to inspire our country," said Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics and executive producer of the network's Olympics coverage.

"For me, the greatest measure of success at an Olympics is the number of messages I receive from parents of young kids who have fallen in love with the Olympics. That child means more to me than anything because I think a love affair with the Olympics is the greatest in all of sports."
Fitting Tribute to a Wonderful Games.

So according to that there was about 75% of USA's Population watching the Olympics not bad. Can't find any figures for us British but it probably wouldn't be high because the Live Broadcasting times here were 2am - 3-4pm because of Beijing being 7 hours ahead.

its really not too impressive that it was the most watched event ever. when you consider that it also had the longest air time of any event ever, by far crushing all the coverage of the previous olympix. i'd look at my tv guide channel, and there would be several channels slotted for like 8 straight hours with olympix. thank you media, for shoving the games down my throat

but i do want to thank them for putting team handball and volley ball on tv (the mens variety, of course). because both these sports were very captivating for periods of time

Very Nice comment ryan w quick, It's only on for 2 weeks of the Year every 4 Years so it can't be that Bad.

Oh Abacus 7 I was talking to Dark Messenger earlier he has still been checking in on the Thread but said it has gone off topic slightly in terms of the Banter between us on Aussie and Pom matters :flowers:.

So I decided to create a new Topic for this in the General Chat Section titled "Pom, Aussie and Kiwi Banter", we'll continue to comment there for the sake of this continuing Banter and to not take this off topic any more. Hope to see you there and Dark Messenger when he reads this.
