I think I got the BitDefender scan to work (I downloaded the 30 day trial...will that have the same effect?) Anyway, here is the log from that. Should I still run the F-secure?

btw, since running the BitDefender, my Internet Explorer and Firefox won't display websites (usually use Firefox, currently using AOL Explorer).

See if you can do this: You may have overlooked it in my other post. Also hold up on the F-Secure for the time being.

Right click on Start choose Explore and find the following in bold and delete it:

C:\rsit\info.txt

In your next reply include a new RSIT log. There should be two text this time around and I would like to see both.

OK, that was what I was looking for. While I am studying your log let's get the Bitdefender uninstalled. After visiting their site I can see why you had problems with the scan. I'm sorry about that I did not realize it had became so aggravating to use and what has happened is you wound up with two antivirus programs running at the same time. After you uninstall the Bitdefender let me know if that solves the problems which came about when you used it and then try a scan with F-Secure.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Ok...

I uninstalled BitDefender and Firefox and Internet Explorer are working again.

I then, however, went to rutn F-Secure, following the steps on their website, and repeatedly go the message "Network Error. Resuming connection..."

followed by "Unable to download necessary Online Scanner components!". My security/ActiveX controls are adjusted to what they recommend. Am I forgetting something or missing a step?

First go here in Internet Explorer: Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom Level. and check to see if your settings are blocking the downloading of Active X controls. If so adjust and run again.

If that is not the case let's try another scanner.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Scan didn't exactly follow the steps listed, hope I did it right. There was no option to save at the end, only export the following .txt report.

Let's go a little deeper and see if something is hiding from us.

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site 1
alternate download site 2
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
    *System Protection and Tracing
    *Processes
*Save created processes to the log
    *Drivers
*Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.

Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.

I would like you to run your AVG again or open it up and see if you can find the log which shows an exact file path to the Bitfrost it is identifying. As of right now I haven't been able to come up with any real infection so let's see what it shows.

While you are at it please check to see if the infection is in quarantine.

I actually deleted AVG, but I can reinstall it, I suppose. Though i don't recall it ever identifying Bifrost, that was AOL Spyware software. I can still run AVG if you think I should, though.

I'm sorry, I had forgotten that you uninstalled the AVG7. I am not familiar with AOL Spyware, is there anyway you can get me a file path of the Bifrost using it?

Also if you have version 8.0.020.000 of Zone Alarm it might be worth trying the following. This is from the Zone Alarm site:

If you’re experiencing slow computer performance when:

Opening an application

Shutting down your computer

Logging off and logging in as a new user

System returning from Standby mode

"Current workarounds for 8.0.020.000 performance issues recommended by ZoneAlarm"

Open ZA

Click Antivirus/Spyware

Click Main

Click the Advanced options button

Click On-Access Scanning

Un-check the Enable on-access scanning box.

Close ZA

Reboot computer for changes to go into effect.

Let me know what you find. I am still trying to find it is an infection causing your problem.

I tried updating my zonealarm (free version), the most updated version I can get is 7.0.483.000.

The AOL spyware window only states that it identified Bifrost, not any more info (such as filepath). I am attempting to search for it on Windows, but so far no luck. Any advice on how to find the file path? Also, AOL blocked it last time. Should I restore it or leave it blocked?

We'll leave it blocked for now.

I have also done quite a bit of searching trying to pinpoint it. Let's try a different scanner, not uncommon for one kind to show something others don't.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to start the program.
  • Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start.
  • At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
