Grinler et al.,

I was wondering about the ewido anti-spyware tool used as part of disabling the icodec/virusburst malware. My 30-day trial is about to run out. Is it worth purchasing a full version? I ask because I already have a hardware firewall, McAfee Enterprise 7.1, plus updated versions of Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware SE Personal. I want to give props to Ewido for helping solve part of the problem, but I'm not sure I need another anti-spyware/malware program on my O/S (XP Service Pack 2). Your thoughts, and everyone else's, are appreciated.

bloodyabo,
Even after the trial of Ewido (now known as AVG Anti-Spyware) runs out, you can still use the program.
It won't have real time protection, and you'll have to update it manually, but it will still work.

Great info on IE. Just wondering if much has changed with these settings since 2004? With new versions coming out all the time plus all the IM updates- new one today. Seems more & more sites are using ActiveX. Don't know who to trust anymore- including MS? I am getting in the habit of just saying "yes" like I did with virusburst. (I'd like to know where those guys live to fertilize their lawns)

Thanks: Pup

Me thinks this thread is a little dated and could do with some updating. Are Spybot and Adaware still where its at? I know they are still available and all.

This forum was written in 2004 would you still recommend the same programs? I used tea timer from spy bot and it seemed to heat up my laptop about 6 degress F. It was running 80 megabytes in the processor. I ran it for about 3 hrs and then removed it with Revo (a great freeware uninstaller) and my computer cooled down immediatly (so it seemed --remember I am new to all this and you cannot think I know what I am talking about) Can anyone shed light or back me up on this?
Nooo - I'm not running multiple real time antisoftware I've evolved past that error.

My momma said I'm not too bright --but I can lift heavy things.

OK obviously a Newb.

I am trying to learn to protect my cpu's and I saw this topic on the forum. It looked exactly what I was looking for, and seemed easy to follow, which is why I did not notice the thread started in 2004.

Is this still the reccomented approach. I have downloaded spybots, and it picked up a bunch of problems. I had ran Malwarebytes yesterday, so it must not have caugt these, not sure if they are doing similar searches.

I loaded adaware 2009.

Any other reccomendations or links to similar type threads that list a comprehenive approcach to total computer protection???

Thanks
Steve

Hello Steve, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

I'd say everything, except 1, & 2, are up to date.
Spybot and Ad-Aware aren't the programs they used to be.
I suggest you substitute Malwarebytes, and SUPERAntiSpyware, for Spybot and Ad-Aware.

Also, check out the AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods forum, for more suggestions.

Thanks,

I have been following the list. SB S&D did find alot of processes, that Malwarebytes (which I have been using for a few weeks) did not find, maybe differnt animals. I uninstalled it, but did not return what it had fixed, and installed the superantispyware.

I think for AV I will try Avast free. What should I do for firewall?

My laptop has been plaqued by virus, so I am learning on it. Although I have 5 cpus @ my office and I want to protect them as well. I have had norton installed, but it almost up, and I need a good AV and firewall. Not sure if I want to reup w/ Norton.

Thanks
Steve

Check out the Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps topic.
You'll find several recommended AV's and firewall's.

The link is very useful. I use Avast Free as Antivirus Applications and Spywareblaster as a Malware Removal. Both are excellent to have and great at security.
