Hello,

I have two PCs on a wired Linksys BEFSR41 router. The 2 PCs are identical in parts, I have xp home sp3 on mine, my wife is running xp sp2.
I can ping between them fine. run/cmd/net view sees both PCs when run from both. ip and dns appear to be OK.
Both can go to the Internet with no trouble. I can go to files on her PC she cannot access mine. I can also use the printer hooked up to her PC as well.
I've tried with both firewalls turned off but nothing changes. In connection properties all software listed is identical and in the same order except that my firewall shows on the list hers does not (she uses windows firewall I use PC tools).

They worked fine until I built us both new PCs.

Wifes PC.

Have you got file sharing turned on?

Yes file and printer sharing are both turned on for both PCs. And the drives/files to be shared are showing the hand icon.

Switch off windows firewall temporarily on both machines and see if you can connect then. This will narrow down the culprit. You could also try unticking use simple file sharing under Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab

I have tried with firewalls down on both PCs nothing changed. Control panel doesn't give me an option to turn off simple file sharing or any type of file sharing on either PC. I do have "turn off simple file view".

Did these problems start after you installed SP3 on your machine or only after you rebuilt the PCs?

rename the computer and the workgroup name (on both if you'd like)

workgroup name: (maybe your last name) (this is the same on both PC's)

Rename pc('s) to first name(s) (or middle name if you used first name) : for example: Toaster (the PC names must be different)

set up a share called: test

right click on MyComputer and go to Map Network Drive and use: \\Toaster\test
(you could also use the IP number, for example, \\192.168.0.100\test )

sp3 went on after the rebuild as I reloaded windows. I have discovered that I am having other trouble now with my P.C. running sp3 so I think I'm going to back up my system, format the drive and start with a fresh install of XP and upgrade to sp2 only and see what happens.

Thanks for all the advice I'll let you know what happens

Both are under MSHOME and have my and my wifes names for the individual P.C.s.

LAN gaming works fine but that wouldn't have much to do with accessing files on the other system.

You said one machine had a third party firewall. Is the windows firewall disabled on that machine?
