Hi there,

new to the forum and not very technically gifted/minded, so please bear with me!!!

Use XP, and have had no problems at all until last week.

Since then, when I click on an internet link within a web page, the page hangs.

Sometimes, I have to close the page and get the option of sending an error report.

Other times, if I wait, he page becomes active again after a while, but the link has been ignored.

An example would be in a forum. I can select threads ok by using the links there, but if a post contains a hyperlink to another site or page, that link would cause the whole page to hang!!!

The only changes to my pc last week were a windows update, of critical files, and a good clearout of temp files followed by a defrag.

The temp files clearout also included the documents & settings/ hidden folder with temp and temp internet folders within it.

Any suggestions?

All help gratefully accepted!

thanks

Brian

THank you tg1911, I have printed that and will have a look.

Appreciate your taking the time to reply!

BTW... the link made the page hang!!! wacko.gif

I had to wait for it to free up again, right click on it and copy the link, then paste it into the address bar at the top of the page!

QUOTE(tg1911 @ Apr 18 2005, 05:40 PM)

Sorry to report no success!!!

I tried looking at the files, and unchecking 'Use DDE', but no improvement.

The strange thing is that links on a news site, for example, seem to work fine.

It is only links within a forum, or links within some web pages that cause the page to hang! Strange indeed!!!

Thanks again for trying... ... back to the drawing board! wacko.gif

did you try the last suggestion: You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32 for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

It's the only one that worked for me.

If supersquaw's suggestion doesn't work, post a HijackThis log to be examined.
This way, we can eliminate the possibility of spyware/malware, being the cause of your problem.

Read the pinned post in the HijackThis forum, here
Please read, and follow, all directions carefully.

Then, run a log, and post it in the HJT forum, at this link. Do not, fix anything, yet.
A member, of the HJT Team, will help you out.
It may take a while to get a response, because the HJT Team are very busy. Please, be patient, these people are volunteers. They will help you out, as soon as possible.

NOTE:
Once you have made the post, please, DO NOT make another post in the HJT forum, until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The first thing they look for, when looking for logs to reply to, is 0 replies. If you make another post, there will be 1 reply. The team member, glancing over the replies, might assume someone is already helping you out, and will not respond. So, just make your post, and let it sit there, until a team member responds. This way you will be taken care of, in the most timely manner.

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I was having a terrible time of it, and was getting really frustrated last night.

Having read through the advice on the forum, I decided to download BHO Demon.

It picked up on a BHO that was only installed last week (around the time my problems began).

The file, in my system folder, was 'req.dll' and BHO Demon couldn't trace it.

I disabled it, and my system is now running better than ever!!!

Thanks again

Brian

me and my big mouth! wacko.gif

turns out that req.dll is a trojan that Norton let slip through and now can't remove!!!

I am currently trying TrendMicro which I saw recommended in the forum.
