This one may win the "most insane Vista issue " yet award. I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Premium and, other than being a bit slow to start, performs everything else just fine. I am currently taking on on-line class (I spend a lot of time on the road and need portable capability-hence the laptop), and it requires a CD that I received from Ivy Software. After placing the CD in the drive, I immediately receive an "Authorware Runtime has stopped working." Vista of course checks for a solution and finds none. Now here's the cool part: I place said CD in my work computer (Windows XP SP2) and it works fine. Must be the laptop or Vista you say, yep, me too.

Here's what I tried (after talking to Ivy tech. spt for an hour who had never heard of this before): disable all AV/Spyware/Malware/Defender etc. programs-no change
Disable UAC-no change
Disable DEP-no change
Go into properties of the Start program and change Compatibility tab to other OS (5 others to be exact)-no change
Scan for virsues with 4 different scanners-no problems but, no change
Scan for SW/MW-none, no change
Run HijackThis-no issues, no BHOs of note, no other conflicts
Run other CDs-fine
Download the newest versions of Macromedia (Authorware is written in Flash)-no change
Reboot-no change
Copy all the files to a new folder and then try to run-no change

So, with the exception of installing XP, either on a separate partition or in virtual mode, I am at my wit's end. Any help would be great.

why won't my laptop work?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around

Although it feels good to part of such a distinguished group, my situation has not improved. It doesn't look like they found any solutions either so, I may be faced with the prospect of just withdrawing from the class and requesting a refund for the materials and tuition. thanks for the link though.

Try this -» create a shortcut to the program on the CD drive
Then right click on the shortcut and select "Properties"
Select the Compatibility tab.
Put a check mark in "Run as Windows XP SP2" and a check mark in "Run as administrator"
Click OK to exit the dialog - then double click on the shortcut to launch the program.

If you can't get the "Run as administrator" option, then just right click on the shortcut and select "Run as administrator" from there.

Another option would be to copy the CD to your hard drive, and then set the compatibility options for all the executable files to XP SP2 and Administrator.
