Sometime last week I noticed that I can't open up any of my MS office saved files like word, excel, access. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but still have the same problem. It will let me open the application of word, etc. and work normally and save a file, but it will not let me open up a file. When I try, I get an error box that says "the file FILENAME is not available."

Any ideas on how to fix this, I really need my MS office apps.

So Word opens, but then File > Open doesn't? Is that from the most recent used list or when you browse?
Have the location of files changed?

Are you on XP or Vista?
If Vista, this link might have some ideas:
http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/948025.htm
Quoting the unregister/register procedure from Ramesh Srinivasan.

File formats of Word files has changed in MS Office2007. Are older formats allowed? Perhaps they aren't.

Something here might work if file associations are wrong - register procedure included

Sorry, I am using Vista and Office 2007. It won't let me open any documents in word (.doc and .docx), excel, access, etc. Everything was fine up until a couple of weeks ago and then it just stopped working and giving me the error msg each time I try and open a saved document.

I tried the register procedure, but I still have the same problem.

Hi codsmith.
If by chance you're usin a Symantec (Norton) product, have a look here.
If not, I would suspect another similar app blocking access to the files.

I think a similar problem was reported here

While it's for Excel, it might be worth trying that solution, since Office applications are pretty consistent in their settings.

I use to have Norton installed and never had a problem but now I am using AVG.

I checked that posting for excel, but that is not the same problem I am having. It will not let me open any saved document on my computer. I can email a document to someone else and open it on another computer, but just not mine. It will not let me open any file from short cuts or through the program itself.

I tried a repair install on word, but still get the same error msg when I try and open a file. Is there any way to clear office off of my computer and try a complete fresh install. I have tried the uninstall and reinstall, but still have the same problem.

Problem solved! I just started to uninstall the most recent programs and kept checking back and finally found out it was AVG 8 that was the culprit.
