I have an old NEC Ready 9944 computer that I would like to restore. It was my very 1st computer. I believe the hard drive is damaged. The DVD/Rom and CD/Rom were new at the time of the "incedent". Once I extract my picture files drom it...if I can..then I would like to upgrade the internals.

Is this possible?? Can I put in a different hard drive/motherboard/memory from another manufacturer ??

Is the new NED Ready 9944 parts available anywhere??

This computer would be primarily used as a back up/web surfer.

You can replace the hdd, just make sure that it is a ATA (IDE) type. I couldn't find any reference to a maximum size drive, but if what I found is accurate that had a 20GB hdd when it was new, so you could probably get away with putting is something larger, like a 80GB hdd.

As for upgrading this computer, it is very old by today's standards. Personally, I wouldn't invest any more money into this, RAM is about the only thing I would invest in if you had to improve anything. It has a maximum capacity of 256MB of RAM.

Thanks for the info,dc3. Here's what I found for specs on it.

NEC Ready 9944 Estimated Retail Price: $1,299
Intel Pentium III processor 450MHz, 96 MB memory, 10.2 GB hard
drive, DVD drive, CD-RW drive and 56 Kbps-capable ITU V.90 modem.

Does this change anything ??

It does actually, because of the age of the machine and the size of the hdd, you may have a BIOS limitation on the size of the hdd that you can use.

Before you invest any money it that, look around as see what a hundred bucks will buy you in the way of a used computer. You should be able to find a much newer on for that price. And you would spend about that much replacing the hdd and upgrading your RAM.
