we have pretty much tried all the stuff on that site and nothing works. oddly enough if she leaves the computer off for a long time like maybe an hour or more, it will work...we have no idea what is causing this, i've never seen anything like this before.

Are you able to start it in safe mode?

As you would have seen from the troubleshooting site protection errors can be caused by almost anything. If the PC restarts OK after being off for a time this may indicate a heat related problem.
Try opening the PC and removing and reseating all cables, plug in cards, memory sticks etc. If the CPU or power supply fans are very dirty get a vacuum cleaner and some cans of compressed air and blow the dust out of them.

Soltek QBIC, Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 512MB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB, Netgear 54Mb/s WAP, ridiculously expensive Satellite Broadband
Windows XP Home SP2, Trend Micro Internet Security, Firefox, Thunderbird, AdAwareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, A-squared Free, Ewido Security Suite.
