How do Can I get WMP to auto upgrade the codex ? I've been in Properties but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it.

I'm no WMP expert as I stopped using it long ago, but I'm pretty sure that option disappeared in .ver 9 and above.
Most people just download the codecs they need separetly. In most cases, the K-Lite codec pack (standard version) is enough. Don't go overboard with the codecs, too many causes more harm then good.

You don't. To paraphrase someone... "Novice users wouldn't know what filters and whatnot to install and not install, and advanced users would ditch the codec pack and install each individually."
K-Lite is very very bloated (even the standard version) and you can easily kill your computer. Info here. They're down for maintenance, but read the first few posts by CLSID and TheFluff to get a general idea.
Most people use CCCP, it plays every common format. You don't even need to worry about what to pick or not, just use Full installation or just a installation that includes Zoom Player or Media Player Classic, then you're all set to play

"If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way." - Bertrand Russell

Skyfuser.
Thank you that, I went to the link CCCP and got to the Combined community codec pack, but when I downloaded I found the download was already in my Downloads file (AdbeRdr812_en_us) then when I opened it and installed I found it was about Adobe reader.
So I can not figure out were Codec comes into it
Thanks.
