BleepingComputer.com: What Programs Would You Suggest?

Hey

I've just noticed that I have hardly any Anti-virus/spyware programs - I have Windows Defender, and Spybot - search and destory.

What sort of programs would you suggest to me to protect my computer from virus' and spyware or is what I have at the moment perfectly fine?

Hi, according to your list there, you don't have any anti-virus installed. If you're looking for a free program there are several good ones you can look into. Avira and Avast are two of the best free ones. (Only install one anti-virus on your machine at a time.) I would recommend installing SpywareBlaster which blocks certain things from ever getting on your computer, but doesn't need to be run in real-time. As far as scanning anti-spyware applications I would suggest adding SuperAntiSpyware and/or Malwarebytes' Antimalware. Make sure you run the AV you choose in real-time along with one of the anti-spyware (malware) programs' real-time protection if you aren't already. If you would like some programs that require payment those could be suggested, as well.

No single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes malware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.
