BleepingComputer.com: Vista Keeps Eating Me Ram.

Hi there,

3 days ago I purchased Windows vista ultimate x64. I installed it a clean install on my PC, Everything went smooth and nice, all of my drivers are compatible and capable of running vista ultimate x64
My specs are: 4 GB DDR2 RAM, Intel core 2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz, Nvidia 9600 GT, Asus striker II Extreme as my Motherboard.

Well, I noticed that after few hours of work on my PC My Ram usage increased significantly for no apparent reason, I only had firefox with 4 tabs open and WMP!! My ram usage was about 65% (2.6GB) out of the 4gb http://i37.tinypic.com/2diis5x.jpg

Note: I increased my paging pool memory to 10 GB, which IS INSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANEE!! without this increase, My ram usage will probably be 99%.

Is this a problem with my computer or what? can this be fixed? is this normal? should I be worried.

hi,,, i know 64bit uses more ram then 32bit,,, but thats a bit much me thinks,,,, have you closed down or set to manual all the services you dont need or use,,, here's a good site thst will guide you through it,,, if your unsure wether you need or use a service and what set a service at,,, dont change it or set it to manual,,,The Black Viper,,,

you could also not use things like the side bar as this will use ram,,,, also take a look in the start up for programs that load on boot up,,, i only have my 2 security programs on start up,,

also some security sweets are resorce hungry,,, like norton 360 or mcafy internet security,,,, i see you have Kaspersky Internet Security,,,, i dont know much about this one appart from its suppose to be good,,, have a look in task manager to see if it uses alot of the systems resorces and google it to see if anyone says it dose.
and also dont forget about vista's superfetch.

Thanks, But I already did what you said, and I thought superfetch gonna help or something but apparently not. My Ram at the moment is at 100% exactly, And I'm lagging like crazy, I just cleaned installed my new OS, that means I don't have anything on startup, except msn live messenger.

any more advices\opinions?

Check what processes are running. Some are Windows Vista doing that alone. Try turning off Windows Vista Aero theme that is a RAM muncher.

Click on the Processes tab in Task Manager and find out which processes are using the most memory. FWIW - my 64 bit Vista shows 2.65 gB being used and since there's well over 90% of it being attributed to System Idle Process, I'd expect that it's Vista dynamically allocating the memory and using the memory for other things when it's not being used otherwise.
