Today my desktop computer which uses Vista stopped connecting to the internet. It is still connected to the wireless router however. When I click "diagnose and repair", it tells me "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(192.xxx.x.x)". It recommends resetting the network adapter "wireless network connection". When I do this, it seems to repair that, and then goes on to say that "checking for other network problems: there still seems to be a problem with your connection. Next, it says "Windows tried a repair but a problem still exists. Cannon communicate with Primary DNS server(xxxxxx). Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response." It then recommends resetting the wireless connection again. I do this several times, and ultimately it tells me that the problem cannot be fixed, etc. I assumed that this was a problem with the router, but when I tried my laptop with XP, the connection and internet work just fine. It is the same with my wife's laptop (also with XP). So it would seem that the problem is with my desktop and/or vista. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, John |

Hello johnhudson,
Click start type cmd then in the command prompt, type ipconfig this will display information on the network connection. Do this on the XP machines and compare the results. let us know what you find. -------------------- Regards

I'm not sure how to do it on the XP computers, I typed it in the "run" command area, and it brought up a small black screen, but went away instantly.
I will try it on the Vista computer and report what it says. |

Just the regular windows firewall would be all that I could think of.
Another odd thing is that briefly I can connect to the internet with the Vista computer with a very faint signal, but it usually doesn't last long because its so weak. So it would seem that it isn't the computer's problem, yet it won't connect to the main router. |

Have you looked on the router setup page to see if the Vista machine has been blocked/banned?

You need to open a web browser firefox internet explorer etc and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1
This should then take you to the setup page. you may need a password. What is the make and model number of your router? -------------------- Regards

It is a local unsecured connection that I am using for the time being. I have no access to the router.

As you have no idea who the router belongs to, I'm going to close this topic (see the forum rules here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/boardrules.php ) If, by chance, this is a public wifi access point, please PM a moderator with a request to have the thread reopened.
If, on the other hand, this happens to be a wireless network from a neighbor's house, it's likely that they found out that you were using their wireless and they changed their settings to prevent you from using their network without their permission. -------------------- - John
