7-zip is a great utility. Just be sure to zip files as ".zip" instead of ".7z" for greater compatibility. It's as easy as right clicking on a file, and selecting to zip.
Also, check out these...link to zip utilities.

Windows Vista comes with a zip utility built-in. It's not too technical, simple point-and-click. Keep in mind this only works on ZIP files not RAR or .7Z files, those require their own programs.
Here's a link on how to do it: Windows Vista Help: Compress and Uncompress Files

I've used WinZIP, WinRAR, and 7-zip. I rarely come across RAR and 7Z files. The built-in Windows utility works best for me. If you do more advanced tasks with ZIP files a different application with more features would be best.

Hey,
I use ALZIP.
These tools (ALTOOLS) are great.
ALZIP will open and extract ZIP, RAR, 7ZIP, and many many more.
I really recommend ALZIP.
Hope this helps

I use 7-zip. Although you rarely come across .7z files, it can extract Windows ZIP files, RAR files, tar files etc.

I like to use Ken Ward's Free Zip utility:

Although, like others have said, both XP and Vista have the ability to Zip and Unzip files.
