Aspire 5100 Vista....

Aspire 5100 Vista.... POST, vista starts to load blue screen....

I have this laptop that starts to load vista and get a blue screen, however it instantly reboots and i cannot read the stop error message. I tried to use vista startup repair but the operating system is not list. I don’t believe the hard drive should require drivers to be loaded, however i did check and could not locate any on acers website. I would simply reinstall but the guy doesn’t have any cd's for it. I do have my personal vista installation cd, but i can’t use his install serial #. I remember on another computer vista detected there was already an activated operating system and was asking for another code. Could i install vista using my serial number, and then enter his number when prompted?.... only thing would be i have ultimate and his is home premium. any thoughts?? let me know if you need any information.

I do believe using serial keys that aren't his are violating the copyright law. ( I am assuming you are repairing this vista installation for a customer/friend )

Your best guess would beg et your hands on home premium disks and reinstall.

That would be nice... my thought was since vista's cd's are the same (the installation files are the same on all cds, home basic though ultimate) that the serial number for his home premium would then make the vista os home premium... but idk sounds like a far stretch....

Vista is like XP in that respect. You have to use the same version.

Click on the ERecovery CD purchase and you should be able to get a replacement disk. They run about $20 plus postage but that is a small price to pay for having the correct disks. :huh:

Most Acers have a recovery partition but I am assuming you have tried that. :huh:

During a Vista install, much more is installed than you call for but only the things you purchase are activated.
The best example would be Shadow Copies, which is not available in Home Basic or Premium. If you purchase a Vista Home Basic or Premium and then upgrade to Ultimate, Shadow Copies is suddenly available in Ultimate but you will see previous versions for the files that have changed, even for the time that you had Home Basic or Premium installed. Strange but true. :huh:
