It depends on which System Recovery option you're choosing. Could you describe how to get to the option that you're using?

When the PC starts up, it comes up with a screen with some options; including system restore. when selected it gives me the option of destuctive restore and windows system restore. i was going to do the destructive restore. thankyou

A destructive system recovery will erase your hard drive and put back the OS that the restore partition contains. Most likely, when you upgraded to Windows Vista you didn't upgrade the restore partition - so you'll most likely end up with Windows XP if you use the destructive recovery option.

Yes, you should be able to - but it all depends on the upgrade that you used and the associated product key.
