You need to google the motherboard to see what it supports. See if SIW will list your motherboard.

Pentium III? Ooh. You might have a difficult time finding a faster CPU for your motherboard as they are considered obsolete. You might get lucky on eBay. I'd recommend buying a new but budget-minded computer. Plenty of nice ones out there that cost under $500 if you want a faster/better performance.

yeah, your motherboard is so old that you might spend more money buying a processor thats faster for that computer, than just overhauling the whole system or buying a new computer. Its just not worth it.

That PC is very old, I had an old Pentium 4 that could run Vista that I bought in 2001. Your PC predates my old one. To put it simply, a new PC would be far more enjoyable and cost effective in the long run.

Thanks for all your advices. I think I might be able to buy a faster processor for as low as 7$.Plus, I'd like to experience overhauling an old system.
Thanks dc3 for the link you've provided. On the motherboard portion it says, manufacturer: compaq model:0630h Serial number:5e90dzd4d0zp north bridge:intel i810e revision a3 south bridge:intel 82801aa (ich) revision a3 cpu : intel III EB cpu socket:socket 370 fc-pga memory capacity:512 mb memory slots: 2 error correction:none What could be the new processor that won't need me to change at all this present motherboard? |

You would be better off throwing that P3 system away, or maybe donating it to someone. It is so much easier to either buy a cheap P4 and board, or even a base model Dell for a couple hundred. There's no reason to stick in the past with that slow hardware.

I looked up your motherboard's slot information, slot 370 if you're curious, it is very old. A Pentium 4, which is, depending on your perspective, a small step up from your Pentium III. The Pentium 4 uses sockets 423, 478, and LGA 775. You cannot fit any of the Pentium 4 CPU's into your motherboard. Yours is limited to Pentium 3's and older Celeron processors. In order to upgrade your processor, you will need to purchase a new motherboard and CPU. If you are going to go through all that effort, it would be simpler to get a new PC.

I have a new 900mhz Celeron w/heatsink and fan, 370socket, 133fsb I was going to use in an old HP. The MB will not support it, if interested I'll make you a good deal on it. I agree its out of date. I updated my old compaq from a 2.93 Ghz celeron to a 2.8 Ghz P4 then started planning a build for a new system almost immediately after. The performance gain just wasnt enough for me to be happy with the compaq because programs and games have already surpassed these old single cores. Just start looking for a new system i think you will be much happier.
