Some Programs Can't Access The Internet

I recently updated Firefox and somehow I couldn't access the internet through it. so I installed the new Firefox 3,However, that didn't solve the problem. I also have other programs that I recently installed, Ventrilo and Pidgin(IM service), that seem to fail to connect too even though I set my Firewall to allow them.

What kind of problem would this be and what can I do to fix it?

What Antivirus are you running? It could be hindering your access too.
