A Happy Fourth to all.

Computer: Dell 6000, 60-gig HDD, 2-gig RAM

Operating System: Vista Home Prem (now); XP Media Center (previous)

Issue: Daughter acquires and upgrades to Vista Home Prem; but upgrade dumps some important data files from a too-small disk (oops).

Good News: Daughter learned long ago from old, fuddy-duddy dad (OFDD) to backup regularly BUT, BU is in "XP" (two types: total, full BU with "emergency" floppy; and, limited, data backups w/ incremental updates are also available).

While daughter is now home from college, OFDD acquires 160-gig HDD to replace old 60-gig in D6000.

Still, though, "important" files (research papers, etc., not to mention "music" and "pictures") are not present, post-upgrade. In short, "My Documents" gone (though, of course, such a directory exists in new Vista).

What to do, what to do?

1) Revert back to XP on old disk?

2) Forge ahead with HDD upgrade/swap, using Acronis Ture Image 11 to clone 60-gig to 160-gig, then recover missing "important" files from XP backup?

3) Restore 60-gig HDD completely with "emergency" full backup revcovery; clone XP to 160-gig; then reinstall Vista upgrade?

4) Go to NASCAR Nationwide Series race in Daytona?

5) Punt?

6) Something else?

Well, I went to the race ...

... then saw you replied (Thanks!).

Got on the suggested MSft KB "workaround" involving (un)hidden files this morning and drew blanks, all said and done. Even hit some of the other "user" accounts just on the outside chance the stuff might've somehow ended up there but they, too, didn't have sought-for files.

More suggestions, pretty please?

(And, no, I won't be hitting the track today. Work all done; now play!)

An update on the above:

I looked in the suggested folders and drew blanks.

Afterward, I went to MicroSoft and grabbed the "NTBackupRestore_x86" utility that allowed me to pick and choose (or fully restore, if desired) XP backup files and restore them to the system now operating under its new Vista OS.

Painless, easy.
