This is a few brief, to the point background information before I get to the problem:  ********* I have Windows XP 64 Bit installed on my C Drive. I then installed another Windows XP 64 Bit on my D Drive.  Audio files can be only played on D Drive. I deleted everything on D Drive. Re-installed Windows XP 64 Bit on C Drive. Audio files cannot be played. ********* The problem now is that Windows Media Player is stating that the sound card and other sound applets necessary for audio fail to be located. I checked my sound devices and all seems to be working fine, however, location of them remains "unlocated". I am using Chinese Simplified Version of Windows XP. Please advice. Thank you! |

Have you looked in the Device Manager to see if the drivers are recognized in the Sound, video and game controllers?
Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Device Manager. If you only see the name of your computer in the pane to the right with a box to the left of it with a + inside, click on the + to extend the other devices. If this is a custom build you should have drivers that came with the motherboard. -------------------- Lord, may we please have a little more chlorine in the gene pool?

When I clicked on Device Manager: (translated to my best ability)
Start Device Manager Failed Name: <Unknown> CLSID: {74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A} I'm not sure if the digits are o's or 0's. Please advice. ***Edited: The thing is everything used to work fine before all this happened. There were no prior problems regarding hardware compability. The following is from Microsoft.
To configure Device Manager to show details: 1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER. 2. Type set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1, and then press ENTER. 3. Type start devmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER. In Device Manager the properties for a device should now provide a Details tab that contains additional information about the device. -------------------- Lord, may we please have a little more chlorine in the gene pool?

I have followed steps 1 & 2 which worked fine. However, after pressing enter for step 3, the device manager still failed to load, it showed the same problem as in my previous post.

Thanks dc3 and garmanma for the advice. I have followed garmanma's advice and after inputting the command on the website, and then inputting the commands from dc3, Device Manager successfully loaded.
However, I have no idea what to do next. Should I provide some more details? I remember there is an online website which can detect the hardware components of my computer, and then copy and paste the details onto the forum post? Please advice.

Do you have the disc (CD) that came with the motherboard, or the audio card? If you are unsure of what you have, download Everest Home Edition. Open Everest and click on Summary in the menu in the left pane. In the right pane go down the items till you find Multimedia, under that you should see Audio Adapter, please post what this is. It would also help to know what the make and model of you motherboard is, you can also find this in Everest. Click on Motherboard in the left pane menu, and click on Motherboard in the right pane.
If the Device Manager has been restored use the instructions that I posted previously to access it, and look in the Sound, video and game controllers and see if there are any yellow triangles with an exclamation mark in it, or a red X. If there are, double click on the item with the error and un-install the driver. Restart your computer and the installation wizard will look for compatible drivers for it. Do you have any CD that came with the computer, there should be a CD for installing the drivers for the motherboard? I you have a sound card in one of the expansion slots you should have a driver for it as well. I have located my motherboard installation disc.
Everything is fine now, I have fixed/re-installed the sound applets and now my sound is working fine. Thank you dc3 and garmanma for helping me out!! Thanks! |
