G'day eveyone, Firstly "antivirus pro 2008", beware of this. This so called antivirus is a bogus program. Do not under any circumstances open or download this. This was sent to me in an email by who i dont know. When this came through on my email, stupid me opened this up and this is where my problems started. Firstly i lost the ability to use my "automatic updates", so in other words it somehow was disabled and i could not switch it back on, no matter how hard i tried. Also i lost my use of "Desktp background". Also pop ups started to appear, mainly advertising.Computer was also running slow and internet use was, well not imposible but very very slow. This program came straight out and said that my computer had 2257 viruses throughout it. Every time my computer started up, this program would scan my computer and more pop ups would appear asking me to buy it. Now for some good news, i started to find out how to get rid of this and found this forum, so with the help of a different post, i downloaded "malwarebytes antimalware". This solved a great deal of the problem and i ended up getting my automatic updates back and my desktop background also the pop ups have stopped. Also i re downloaded avg antivirus, so all is pretty good at the moment. Ok i'll get to the point now, which is, in "control panel" then "add and remove", this program is still there and i cant get rid of it out of that section. Also i have noticed it has created another program called "MProtecter", which has never been there before and i can't get rid of it also. I am running "windows xp home edition." So basically if someone can explain to me in simple terms how to remove these titles from that section of my computer, it would be a great help. And i promise i will lean from this. Thanks thumbup.gif

Regards Juha to the above post, still cant get rid of it out of the "add and remove section". It presents itself as "antivixp08" and a seperate one also which is called "MProtector". It dont seem to be active as my scan by malbytes shows no faults in the system. The system seems to be working fine, but the name is still in that section and the computer does no longer recognise the name. When i go to uninstall it, it goes through the process and then still remains. Regards Grassy

Did you complete the scan with MBAM? If not, please do so. If you did then open MBAM, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

They were probably just orphaned entries. We have a tutorial on how to fix these. See "How to Manually Remove Programs from the Add/Remove Programs List".

If there are no more problems or signs of infection, you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.

You're welcome.

Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection, be sure to read:
• "Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe".
• "How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!".
• "Best Practices - Internet Safety for 2008".
• "Hardening Windows Security - Part 1 & Part 2".
• "IE Recommended Minimal Security Settings" - "How to Secure Your Web Browser".

• Avoid online gaming sites and peer-to-peer (P2P) or file sharing programs as they are a security risk which can make your system susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans target and spread across P2P files sharing networks and gaming sites. In some instances the infection may cause so much damage to your system that recovery is not possible and the only option is to wipe your drive, reformat and reinstall the OS. The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid gaming sites and not use any P2P applications. Read P2P Software User Advisories and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

Hi Grassy - I got this dang virus too. I tried the above but it didn;t work. PAret of the reason may be that I cannot get online to download the updates. I tried the manual version but I cannot find the "C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware" foldar to put it in. I am using Windows XP pro. Under my user name I have these folders - cookies, desktop, favorites,my docs, start menu, user data. I searched in them but never found the "application data" folder.

Could you guide me a little bit? I imagine without the updates this solution may not work and so far I have not been able to get back online to do it auromatically.

Thanks!

Welcome to BC IPT

If you have an issue or problem you would like to discuss, please start your own topic. Doing that will help to avoid the confusion that often occurs when trying to help two or more members in the same thread with different problems. Even if your problem is similar to the original poster's problem, the solution could be different based on the kind of hardware, software, system requirements, etc. you are using and the presence of other malware. Further, posting for assistance in someone else's topic is not considered proper forum etiquette.

Thanks for your cooperation.
