Hello stupidblonde,

Is there an error message that displays when you try to open the file?

alan:

wow thank you for such a fast reply. NO there is no error message. however when i go into "help" on the excel toolbar it has several files (the ones that i was trying to open) "disabled". it asks if i want to enable and i say yes...then the system tells me that it was corrupt or missing information and can not open.

thank you.

What version of excel are you using? Have you tried opening excel then navigating to file then open then trying to open the file in question? Also is the file you are trying to open a supported file type for excel?

It sounds like a corrupt file association, open control panel then folder option and select file types can you arrange the list by extensions look for xls, xla, xll what application is set to open each of these extensions?

When you open control panel you should see folder options, you way have to switch the view of control panel to classic view.
You can get to the control panel by the start menu.

Then the file associations check out.

The next step is to check the properties of the file. Right click the excel file you are trying to open select properties The main points to check are the Type of file part the opens with part and the file attributes.

You may need to repair office or reinstall it to correct the problem.

No problem about the delay,

Do you have the office CDs? You may have to do a repair install or remove office completely and reinstall it.

It is strange, the settings check out fine, at this point I suspect a corrupt or damaged file that is hampering Excell.

thanks again alan for your patience
No problem, I'm glad to help.
