 Cant Remove Old Xp Installation From Boot Menu |

Some programs such as 3Ds Max, Nimbuzz, and VLC player, which were alright earlier, stopped working, and so I reinstalled XP into C drive. However, I gave a new computer name and organization name, and this resulted in creating two my documents folder for each user in C:\Documents and Settings instead of replacing it. For example it was like darkillusions' documents (old one) and dark.BP's documents(new). The old folder was not accessible. Fortunately later on I learnt how to gain access, and deleted these folders. But somewhere in between I installed windows in D drive (I have two 40gb hard disks C and D) and tried to format C drive by logging on the XP installation in D drive (which I found later was impossible). Now this created two XP installations.Both C drive and D drive had XP. So, on bootup I was prompted to choose which installation to start. I formatted D drive. Now D drive doesnt have XP installed. However the prompt on bootup still shows this removed XP. If I choose this installation it says that <windows root>\system32\hal.dll is missing. Basically what I want is to remove the prompt to start with the old missing installation. |

Hello darkillusions,
Go to start then run type msconfig click the BOOT.INI file select the check all boot paths button. It will then cycle through the the boot partitions and remove all those that are invalid. If you have an XP CD you can probably repair the error on the other partition. -------------------- Regards

Thanks a lot nigglesnush85. BOOT.INI trick worked!
 A friend IT admin suggested I reinstall fresh a copy of XP on both C and D lol. Good that I hadnt listened to him and came here instead. Format & reinstall seems to be the only answer some people have, but I know there is always somebody out there who could give me a better alternative and save the day.
