Can your computer boot into safe mode? If it can you may be able to un-install the program that is causing problems. What makes you think that Avast is giving you false positives? If you can boot into safe mode choose the option to boot with networking and download any or all of these free online tools to find any signs of malware.

Extrodewise,
Try logging into "Safe mode". If it works, try "System Restore" to a back date as, Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore Good luck. -------------------- Technology Bytes Plus

have you given your computer enough time? I used to use zonealarm ,and it generated a pause like this, and after a few seconds, it went away. Perhaps something else is messing with windows, and win just needs some time.
