Hi all! I keep getting this blank screen showing just the default green background (bliss) for Windows XP after boot-up. I tried re-installing my Avast! Antivirus because I suspected the prior version had become corrupt. After the installation and initial updating, this problem started. The prior version of avast kept alerting me of the presence of rootkits on my computer which I suspected to be untrue. Anyway the problem on ground now is this blank screen just after logon. Alt+Ctrl+Del doesn't work, can't see my taskbar, Ctrl+Esc doesn't work either, everything is blank just as if I terminated the explorer.exe process. Help desperately needed please....!

Can your computer boot into safe mode? If it can you may be able to un-install the program that is causing problems. What makes you think that Avast is giving you false positives? If you can boot into safe mode choose the option to boot with networking and download any or all of these free online tools to find any signs of malware.

Note that Avast is on this list, so just skip over it and try the others.

Extrodewise,

Try logging into "Safe mode". If it works, try "System Restore" to a back date as,

Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore

Good luck.

have you given your computer enough time? I used to use zonealarm ,and it generated a pause like this, and after a few seconds, it went away. Perhaps something else is messing with windows, and win just needs some time.
