Hi guys,

Hope someone can help me with this, else I am going to be taking my PC to get repaired...

My PC is refusing to boot up, and has the following error...

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the orginal setup CD rom.

Select r at the first screen to start the repair

I have a Dell Dimension 9200, with XP. Dual core processor. Not sure what else system wise people need to know

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, I use the following steps:

Insert the Windows Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive when prompted to do so.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If I press R to recover, it goes to the next screen. I select the only option of 1: C Drive, and it accepts it and stays idle.

If I press the first option to begin WindowsXP setup, it appears to go to the next step and then stays idle when looking for previosuly installed windows

Is it likely that my hard drive is fried/broken? Or is there any other possible solutions? BTW i am writing this on my laptop, so I do have a spare PC!

If it does not let you access your C: drive, then there's likely to be a problem with the drive. I'd suggest running a bootable diagnostic from the manufacturer or your hard drive (they're usually free).
